For years, my wife had been wanting us to get a dog. I have always been a dog lover, but in my 20’s had become quite allergic to some breeds. I was scared that we would get one, and have to give him up because of my allergies. One day, my wife emailed me a couple of pictures of a beautiful labrador retriever named Bentley. His owner was moving and couldn’t bring him, and wanted to place him in a good home. We met Bentley in January of ‘08, and within a couple of weeks he became ours. My allergies didn’t flare up too badly around him, and now don’t bother me at all. He is truly our best friend, and couldn’t imagine life without him. We just celebrated 2 years with him, and are already planning his 5th birthday party in April, just kidding… sort of.

As far as his name, I’m not exactly sure how he got the name Bentley. My guess is it came from the fact that his tail has a little bend in it. Bent = Bentley…?? It works for me, and would have never dreamed of changing it. He is Bentley, and always will be.

We found our kitten abandoned in our shed and fell in love with her. At the time she was tiny – smaller that a Beanie Baby.

Since we were living in Greece at the time, I wanted to name her Athena Sophia but the name “Baby Cat” is what stuck. I guess it just seemed appropriate given that she was, in fact, a baby cat. Her nickname though is Sakoola, the Greek word for “bag”, because she loves to climb into bags. Its hard to imagine life without her. She has and continues to be a true blessing!

I have owned and been fascinated by reptiles for many years. But this past October really put my skills to the test.

I was given 2 Bearded Dragons by a couple I met in a pet store. These Dragons where emaciated and in really bad shape. After bringing them to the vet, I had to make a difficult decision to euthanize one of them.

The other Dragon is doing amazingly well – he has doubled in weight, and he has the best personality I have ever seen in a reptile. He always wants to be with someone, on their shoulder or sleeping on my computer desk. He even sleeps in my bed.

He is a curious little guy and never wants to be in his tank, hence the name, “Curious George”. He can change into the most amazing colors depending on his mood. I am not sure of his age because he was given to me and the previous owners were not sure of anything. I am just so glad that I could save one from a life of misery and that he came out to be an amazingly gentle and loving animal.

Rosie is now 5 years old and the Queen of the house. I kept her name Rosie because she already knew it and it fits her perfectly. She is spoiled beyond belief and has broken every house rule there is. No dogs on the couch – broke it. No dogs upstairs – broke it. No dogs on the bed – yep, broke it! She is a Princess in full form, she is my world and I would do anything for my puppy!

It all started 13 years ago with a trip to the local animal hospital to look at kittens with my mother and younger sister. We all fell in love with this extremely rambunctious and adorable black and white kitty. My mother allowed my sister and I to name him. The popular video game at the time was Sonic the Hedgehog, the speedy little blue guy. Although we did not have a blue kitten, he was sure speedy so “Sonic” his name became.

Well, as Sonic grew up he sort of outgrew his name. He turned out to be a LARGE Kitty, and speedy he was not! He is now around 20 pounds and is diabetic in his old age but he sure is an affectionate guy.

When I first saw him he was 4 days old. I fell in love with him – he was so cute! I sat and held him while he slept for an hour. I visited him once each week for the next 7 weeks (the breeder lived over 2 and a half hours away!). He became more and more lively and playful as the weeks went by. When it was time to bring him home with me, he was already used to me and my scent. I hope this made it easier for him to leave his mother and his litter mates.

Lilly is a Ragdoll (a breed of cat that goes limp when you pick them up) and she is the darling of our household.

She joined our family just before Easter four years ago, and since Lily’s are popular during that time of year and we wanted a feminine name, we thought that naming her after the flower would be perfect.

Lilly is very affectionate and loves to be with us all the time. She’s a lot more vocal and adventurous than the average Ragdoll and it’s not unusual to see her climbing to the highest ledges and shelves in the house.

When we first got her as a kitten, she was a Maniac…and I say that with a capital ‘M’! Our household was turned upside down as she tore through it, terrorizing our other cat and destroying the curtains. We thought that we would have to return her to the breeder, who kept saying “don’t worry, she’ll calm down.” To be honest, we didn’t really believe her, but at some point, Lilly did calm down – and now we can’t imagine our lives without her!

I rescued Suki from a local shelter (her name was Gracie at the time), and I decided to name her Suki after a town I visited in South Africa called Soekmekaar, meaning “searching for each other”. I decided to use the phonetic spelling of the word (instead of Soekie) and coincidentally; it’s also a Japanese name meaning “beloved”.

Although she was 4 years old when I adopted her, Suki has settled into her new home as if she has always lived here. She had been in a small cage at the local shelter for over a month, so I guess she was just really relived to be out.

Suki is very easy-going, loves to sleep and loves to explore places she shouldn’t! Whenever I turn on a flash light or laser pointer, she gets very excited and starts to ‘talk’ and chirp. It’s very cute and funny to watch. Suki is a wonderful companion, and I’m very glad we found each other.

This is probably an example of what you should NOT name a cat! In my defense, I was only 6 years old when I decided to name our new kitten “Chocolate Fart Bum”. I can’t exactly remember why I chose this name…I think it had something to do with the kitten’s sensitive stomach. In any event, when my mother was asked the cat’s name on her first visit to the vet, she quickly replied “er…um…ch…CHOCKY!” And so, Chocky it became.

Chocky was a Siamese/stray cat mix. Besides her lovely nature and the fact that she used to love to go on long walks with us, the most remarkable thing about her was that when her mother died unexpectedly, Chocky took over the litter of her half-brothers and sisters, and even though she had been spayed and never had a litter of her own, she started lactating and feeding them! She lived to be 16, and we all miss her dearly to this day.
